He was supposed to accompany the newly arrived dead souls. Megaera genuinely starts to enjoy talking to him so he doesn't feel so alone. Although Hypnos no longer thinks of Megaera as invincible, he is easily able to overcome the 'rejection'. So Hypnos allows himself to believe that Megaera started dying more frequently just to see him exclusively, as if they had some sort of platonic connection. Having always perceived Megaera as invincible, her pedestal begins to crack, whose flames are stoked with each defeat to Zagreus, even with her "incrible advice". Initially, she doesn't care for Hypmos, sees him as clown and she is too busy for his childish antics When Megaera emerges from the Styx, he gives her the same type of advice he offers to Zagreus, jokingly saying "My condolences." With each visit from Meg, Hypnos begins to develop a small crush on her and sees Megaera as a lone wolf and someone very badass. Eventually Hypnos will consider Zagreus to be his 'best friend', or the closest he has to one. Although Zagreus has not always been kind to him (Zagreus himself admitting to Thanatos that he has personally "been mean to Hypnos a lot"), Hypnos enjoys having the opportunity to talk to Zagreus whenever Zagreus dies Hypnos comes to not only view Zagreus as a friend, but as a 'real friend' after Zagreus speaks to Thanatos on Hypnos' behalf. As the staff member responsible for recording details of deceased shades and their deaths, Hypnos knows exactly how Zagreus has died and will offer advice on how to avoid a specific death or handle a specific enemy in the future. Hypnos is the first person to greet Zagreus whenever Zagreus emerges from the Pool of Styx. Others are surprised that Zagreus can tolerate him. Initially, Hypnos acts like an annoying younger brother, even though he is much older than Zagreus. Charon doesn't seem to pay much attention to Hypnos, but Hypnos knows that Charon always takes care of them despite being very busy with his constant responsibilities. Unlike Thanatos, who always refers to him in a professional manner without any reference to their familial relationship, Hypnos uses more affectionate terms, and Charon doesn't seem to mind, so he must like it. One of Charon's little brothers, Hypnos respects and admires his brother. Zagreus also encourages him to be kinder and rebukes him for how "mean" he has been to him, striving to be less harsh with his twin brother, and their relationship improves from there. As he becomes more productive, he secretly praises him. As indifferent as he may seem, he cares about him and intervenes when he is at risk of losing his job, creating lists to help him manage his time better and encouraging him. Thanatos doesn't realize how hard he is on Hypnos, but he only does it because he thinks it's the right thing to do for his own good. Wanting his attention, at one point he suggests that Thanatos kill all mortals so they can spend more time together, but he only rebukes him. Hypnos doesn't care what others think of him, but fears that his twin will reject him. Hypnos also has family issues with him and is questioning whether his brother takes care of him and whether disturbing his sleep is intentional. He spares little time to talk to his brother otherwise, and although Hypnos has submitted a quality report, he shows little faith in him and assumes that someone must have helped him. Initially, Thanatos seems cold towards his brother, their interactions consisting of Thanatos giving Hypnos boring lectures on professional ethics. But her attempts to encourage his independence stem from both maternal care and her ongoing concerns about his work ethic she is expressly reassured to see him demonstrate capability, and the boundaries she sets are those she believes are in his interest, regardless of his opinion.Įven though they're twins, the two are quite different, with Hypnos being relaxed Thanatos efficient. Additionally, it is evident that Nyx rarely praises Hypnos: when she says that his "efforts should be commended" for the first time, he assumes that someone else praised him and makes several assumptions about who - deducing even Hades - without Nyx occurring to him as a possibility. As he receives it, she expects Zagreus to be prepared for it, referring to Hypnos. She anticipates that others will find her disposition unpleasant and, without warning, will offer to punish him on behalf of others. She instructs him not to call her "mother" in the main hall, which he does all the time, and also asks him not to talk to her during work hours, which he does. Believing that Hypnos is overly dependent on her, Nyx strives to promote her son's independence by maintaining emotional distance.
